A case under the Anti-Dowry Act has been registered at a police station in Moradabad against Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, his wife Beena Singh, son Abhimanyu Singh, grandson Abhijeet Singh and three others.
According to Moradabad SSP Prem Prakash, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Chandausi, has ordered for the case to be registered. It was registered on July 27.

There was a two-day delay in registering the case despite the court order. When asked for the reason of the delay, Prakash said -

The matter was being inquired into.

The case is based on the allegations against Arjun Singh made by Madhvendra Singh, the father of Arjun Singh’s grand daughter-in-law Priyanka Singh. Madhvendra Singh has accused Arjun Singh and his family of ‘demanding’ a Mercedes car and a flat from him and also of tormenting his daughter when their demand was not met.

Arjun Singh apparently made an attempt to distance himself from the allegations faced by him and his family. As a feedback to the Anti-Dowry Act registered against him, Arjun Singh said that he was oblivious to the demands made by his family. He added that he ’stays away from family matters’.

I have nothing to do with it. My opinion was sidelined at the wedding

- he told CNN-IBN.
He also said that he did not even attend the wedding of his grandson, which happened one and a half years back.

However, it is indeed shameful that such a medieval and degrading practice should exist within the family of one of our revered ministers, and as a matter of fact, in any family in this country, when we have come such a long way in terms of social progress.

Human beings are not tools for earning money. Neither should marital relationships be based on monetary transactions. It is a disgrace to human dignity, not ‘Indian culture’. Our elders, with all due respect, should understand this.
