The saga of violence is still on in Nandigram. A shootout erupted between CPM and anti-land seize campaigners in Tulaghata and Bhangabera areas of afflicted Nandigram on Sunday. The incident took place alongside the vital municipal polls commencing in nearby Haldia.

The conflict broke out at 11 am and random firing persisted for almost an hour, according to East Midnapore SP G Srinivas. No injuries have been reported on either side.

A camp was arranged by CPM near Haripur on Thursday, for the collection of funds to aid the party supporters who had taken off from Nandigram after the bloodshed on 14th March.

According to the allegation of a local CPM leader, BUPC activists attacked the camp and set fire to the stage and the party flag.

On the other hand, the BUPC supporters claimed that the camp was held with an intention to ‘influence voters’ in the Haldia municipality voting. The poll, however, carried on calmly, as reported.

Several brawls between CPM supporters and Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee (BUPC) activists were going on for the last couple of days, according to SP G Srinivas. Bullets and bombs were being used without restraint in these clashes.

The renewed upsurge of violence in Nandigram at this point may suggest a bigger political cataclysm. The Nandigram hearing has concluded on Thursday, and the state has justified the use of force in Nandigram.

The vicious confrontation between the government and the protesters in Nandigram had cooled down a bit when Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee decided to step back on the dispute over land. However, the memory of the cruel massacre has made the Nandigram people too sensitive to be able to trust the state again. With the decision of the court released, there might be another turning point in the whole scenario.

At least it is not too early to anticipate another row on the Nandigram front.
